Asia weekly round-up: Macau bounces back? PAGCOR, Konami rise & NSW

This week， Asia saw Macau reveal its gross gaming revenue (GGR) for January – with last month representing the first time that China has significantly eased its Covid restrictions since the virus hit in 2019.

January’s GGR in Macau reached MOP$11.58bn (US$1.43bn) 83% up on January 2022， which not only showed a dramatic bounce back following the easing of restrictions， but it also beat Las Vegas’ December total， which stood at $1.31bn.

PAGCOR’s income rises by 69%

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (PAGCOR) reported a 69% income from its gaming operations， rising to PHP 55.1bn (US$1bn).

Both regulator and operator in the Philippines， PAGCOR’s finances have been boosted in 2022 by the reopening of borders and relaxed Covid-19 measures. 

These full-year results became apparent once the regulator-cum-operator's Q4 2022 report was published， which showed a 9% income increase from September-December 2022 to PHP 15.9bn.

Konami posts 6% annual revenue increase

Konami has reported revenue of JPY226.9bn ($1.77bn) for the nine months ended December 2022 (FY22 Q3)，Casino games a 6% increase from the prior-year period.

The company broke down its revenue by business segment， with Digital Entertainment leading the way with a total of JPY156.4bn， up 2% year-on-year， as revenue for Gaming and Systems for the period climbed 49% year-on-year to JPY27.9bn.

New South Wales Labor silent on facial recognition vendors

Last month， opposition leader Chris Minns confirmed that Labor will mandate RFT at gaming venues should Labor win the election next month.

The gambling reform packages for both the New South Wales (NSW) Labor and Liberal parties include the use of facial recognition technology (FRT)， but neither party has disclosed which vendor technology they plan to use.

It comes after ClubsNSW announced in October 2022 that 100 pubs and clubs in the state had voluntarily deployed FRT to identify problem gamblers who have opted into the self-exclusion register by matching them to photos that were supplied by the participants.
